On October 5, 2012, Natchez Transit, with the help of the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) and the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), broke ground for the construction of a $2.5 million state-of-the-art public transportation hub for southwestern Mississippi. This facility will provide much needed recourses for the regional goals of (SMART) Southwest Mississippi Accessible Regional Transit.

This new transit center in Natchez will be Mississippi’s first regional public transportation center and maintenance facility.  Natchez was chosen for the facility, because the city is a centrally located economic hub in southwest Mississippi and has a strong local transit system.  The Natchez Intermodal Transit Center is the primary regional hub for SMART.  The Natchez Intermodal Transit Center will act as the primary call center for community transit. A primary goal is to connect and coordinate the transit resources of all mobility service agencies in the southwestern Mississippi region.

At the groundbreaking, Mississippi’s Southern District Transportation Commissioner Tom King said, “This groundbreaking represents a significant step forward in our mutual efforts to improve mobility options for citizens not only in Natchez, but also in all the southwest region of our state.” Natchez Mayor Butch Brown said, “This will set the example and raise the bar statewide and regionally.”

The new center includes a park-and-ride lot, offices for Natchez Transit, parking for transit vehicles, a three-bay regional bus maintenance facility, retail space for transportation-related vendors, and a passenger terminal. Once completed, the center will serve as a centralized location for the coordination of transportation services from the members of the SMART group and a centralized regional vehicle maintenance facility. It is designed to also serve as an evacuation center and shelter for people displaced from coastal disasters.
